Heavy rains caused flash floods in Coahuila and Durango, Mexico

Cars were swept away and homes were severely damaged when powerful flash floods swept through areas along the border between the states of Coahuila and Durango in Mexico.

Flash floods hit the city of Torreon in the state of Coahuila on the night of August 04 to 05, 2021. Local authorities reported that more than 41 mm of rain fell in a very short period of time in the western parts of the city.

The river, which runs through several areas of the city, burst its banks. Authorities said the situation worsened due to the accumulation of trash and debris in the riverbed, as well as the illegal construction of houses near the river.

Floodwaters gushed down the streets, taking cars and buildings with them. Authorities said at least 42 homes were damaged and 200 people were affected. Temporary housing was provided to the affected families.
